The Orange Wheelbarrow

Me Musing . . . December 27, 2009 . . .

A month or so ago Sandi of Fabric of Vision in Ashland sent me an email that she had gotten in a few Gee's Bend Quilt Kits.

Since I had traveled to Cleveland, Ohio about 4 or 5 years ago to see the traveling exhibit (I picked Cleveland as it was close to where my two best friends from Ohio school days live!!!!!), I ordered a kit.

Some of the fabric . . .
the ones I DIDN'T use!!!!!!!

At first when the fabric arrived, I thought some pieces were flawed, until I read that the fabric was hand dyed and much like the original quilts, it was not uncommon to find slight imperfections in printing.

Actually I think spots like these were done on purpose
to resemble grease stained fabric!

I washed the fabrics as I always do and then set them aside as other work around here had my attention. Then about 2 weeks ago on PBS was a special called 'The Art of Quilting' which was all about 'Art Quilts' . . . ones made as art and not for use on a bed.

I was awed by some of the work and I dug out the quilt kit I had ordered. The fabrics shown in the first photo looked rather plain,
so I picked the ones from the kit that I really liked (my favorite green, teal, sienna (how could Che'usa Sienna Wend not pick THAT one?????!!!!!!!!) and amazingly, black.

I don't wear black and don't usually decorate with it, but nowadays so much comes in black . . . appliances, tv's, computers, lamps . . . that it has wormed its way into my life!

Since the fabrics were hand dyed, the black looked totally different after washing. It changed to a dark cocoa brown with overtones of dark brown-black. (One of those things you have to see in person me thinks!)

I layed out those fabrics and went to my stash to see what else I could find. There were a few scraps from when we recovered the thousand dollar chair . . .

some left from the curtains I just hung in the breakfast room for winter colour and its mate that I had also gotten in England years ago. Some more came from a pillow cover that I had just replaced and a few 'fat quarters' of wonderful Japanese indigo Bev had brought me back from Portland last year.

Begin the Begine . . .

I seem to be attracted to circles just now and thought I would use some of the indigo as circles for interest . . . the best layed plans . . .

Laying out strips . . .
the green is some extra Gees Bend yardage I bought
to fill in for the colours I wasn't using!

By the time I got the strips sewn together I decided the indigo circles didn't really add anything so I left them off!

(This just looks big as it is laying on an orange duvet cover)

I had enough of the green and black for the backing (actually the reverse side as I am using this as a duvet cover for an 'almost a twin size' wool comforter I made a few months ago!).

The indigo circles fit right in there!

Hmmmmmmmm . . . are they circles layed on the green . . .
or are they holes surrounded by green?????

Ohhhhhhhhh . . . and don't forget to make your little
'New Year Bag'
before the clock strikes midnight the 31st . . .
a tradition Mother and I did every year so we would have money for the new year!!!!!! I have no idea where she got that idea, but I can remember running around at 11:55 p.m. on New Year's Eve and she and I finding needle and thread to whip up a little bag to put a penny in . . . 'seed money' me thinks!!!!!!!!!

Last year's bag . . .

I'll use some of my Gees Bend Zen scraps
for my
2010 New Year Bag . . .

Until soon,

Che'usa
