The Orange Wheelbarrow

Me Musing . . . January 8, 2010 . . .

It was hard for me to decide whether to post this on the Orange Wheelbarrow pages, which have been for my 'Sewing and Creations Musings' or on the Chinra Cottage-Minka pages that show all the remodeling that has been going on here . . .

I got so excited wanting to post photos of a wall hanging I just finished that this is where it ended up!

After this summer's paint marathon . . . remember, I painted the bathroom that sort of periwinkle colour . . . then we had re-installed that
oak-kind-of cabinet behind the toilet.

The new 'tall toilet' just got installed, which meant the cabinet had to come out. It ended up staying out as it would have meant cutting off part of it to make it high enough and I wasn't all that fond of the cabinet anyway!

I decided I wanted something pizazzzzzzzzy there that would bring in more colour soooooooooo I spent last night and most of this morning catching up on a wonderful Blog by Stephen, the owner of Sri, a textile gallery in Brooklyn, New York specializing in antique Japanese folk textiles.

By the time I finished I felt like I had taken a mini-excursion to Japan and couldn't wait to get out some of my fabrics to play around with!

I dug out some Kibira (traditional Japanese raime woven fabric) and it just wasn't the right colour (too brown/beige), but found some I had ordered off ebay (I think from Thailand) in a wonderful mustard yellow colour. Kibira is woven a particular size, which happened not to be wide enough for what I wanted, so I put two pieces together for the backing.

Then I got out the silk Kenzan and I had dyed last year on my visit to Portland and some other fabrics that felt like they might work in the 'mystery piece' that was evolving!

As you can imagine, I had fabric everywhere in the kitchen. I also had a wonderful bracelet given to me by my friend Laura. I think someone had convinced her 'it was her' and she bought it, only to realize she would never use it!

Luckily, I became the benefactor. Eb and I oohed and aahed over it and as I attempted to put it on, I realized that IF I did manage to get it on, I would never be able to remove it . . . darn!

Me thinks it was that fabulous bracelet that set this piece into motion tonight!

I fringed the mustard yellow fabric;
hemmed the edges of a silk scarf (green and muted salmon);
added some dyed green silk (that I had hand-stamped with a saying
that I can't read as it bled on the fabric!!!!!!!);
added an old kimono piece of fabric in striped olive/dark blue/orange;
made a few twists in that fabric to hold the bracelet in place;
added some hand-dyed ribbon
and hung the whole thing on a piece of bamboo!

Close-up of the hand-dyed, stamped green silk
and the kimono fabric around the bracelet.

I realize now that I should have taken a photo
of just the bracelet before I put the piece together.
I sure don't want to unwrap it now . . .
this photo may show the colour and uneven shape a little better!

Well, that's enough excitement for one day . . . off the bed!

P.S. . . Jan. 9th . . .

I took another photo this morning in better light . . .

Until soon,

Che'usa
