The Orange Wheelbarrow

Living life as a beautiful artform is my highest aspiration . . . Che'usa

Me Musing . . . November 5, 2010 . . .

This isn't one of my usual 'Musings', but an Announcement to let you know what I have been working on in the last month.

As many of you know, in August we were fortunate to have master
harp-guitarist
John Doan stop in Etna on his way back home from his West Coast tour and keep us spellbound during his Celtic Pilgrimage Concert.

Everyone soooooo wanted John to come back again, that he said he would.

Thanks to the co-sponsorship of the Scott Valley Chamber of Commerce and the generosity of the Scott Valley Berean Church,
John
is returning to Etna, performing a Benefit for the Community Lunch Program on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 3:00 pm. This will be a
'live'
version of his Emmy-nominated Public broadcast television special, 'A Victorian Christmas' which reenacts what it might have been like to celebrate Christmas a century ago ~ recapturing the feeling of a time before radio and TV and cell phones and texting and, and, and, and . . .

In addition to the harp-guitar, John will bring with him about 12 other original instruments, including a Classical Banjo, American Mandolin Harp, Parlor Guitar, Gibson Harp Guitar, Rollmonica, Hill Country Harp and Ukelin.

If all those aren't enough to make you run out and buy a ticket, then I don't know what would!!!!!!!!

You can learn more about John and his music at his website.

The version of the harp guitar that John plays is a rare, 20-string instrument made in Portland, Oregon with history going back to the nineteenth century in Europe and America. He is one of the few masters of this twenty-string harp guitar. It supplements the standard guitar's six fretted strings with six unfretted sub-bass strings, but its most distinctive sound is the crystalline harp tones of 8 treble strings, which ring with bell-like clarity. John explains, "it has almost the range of the piano but it is a lot easier to carry with you!"

A little about Scott Valley's Community Lunch Program

The Senior meals program began in the late 1990’s as a joint effort by the Etna United Methodist Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. At that time the Nutrition Site in Greenview was only serving meals Monday to Thursday. The churches realized a need for Seniors to have a hot meal on Fridays also; so with the help of a grant from the Beulah Foundation and meals prepared by Fran McIntyre and Beverly Moran, the ‘Loaves & Fishes’ Friday meals began.

Over the years, several others have also shared the kitchen duties and many faithful and dedicated people have, and continue to deliver meals to the homebound on weekdays.

When the funding for the Senior meal program at the Nutrition Site in Greenview was cut, the Churches once again ‘stepped up to the Plate’ (no pun intended!) and the program evolved into what is now Scott Valley’s Community Lunch Program serving meals to people of all ages. A $3 donation is requested; however, regardless of income, everyone is welcome . . . it's good food and friendly fellowship . . . so please join us for lunch!

The Scott Valley United Methodist Parish
serves a hot meal on Tuesdays & Fridays at noon
at 137 Diggles in Etna
and
the Scott Valley Berean Church
serves a hot meal at noon on Thursdays
at 134 Church St., Etna.

We are truly grateful to those volunteers from the Scott Valley Methodist Parish, the Scott Valley Berean Church, the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish and generous donations from local Service organizations and Scott Valley residents that help to keep this much needed Community Lunch Program alive and well!.

Until soon,

Che'usa
