The Orange Wheelbarrow

Me Musing . . . December 7, 2008 . . .

The other day I dug out an old favorite cotton knit turtleneck and after wearing it most of the day, I realized that I really liked the way it felt and looked. I searched in my pattern box and couldn't find a raglan sleeve pattern at all. So I googled 'raglan sleeve' and you would have thought I was looking up something from 40 years ago!

Geeeeeeeeeez . . . I didn't think they had gone that far out of style! They are now considered 'Vintage'!!!!!

I then went on ebay and searched for raglan sleeve top patterns and found one . . . lo' and behold . . . a Stretch and Sew pattern. (Remember those from the 70's????!!!!!!!!)

Soooooooo I had a few days before it would arrive in the mail, and decided to go back through my patterns as I remembered seeing a Stretch and Sew pattern I had never made but bought it waaaaaaay back then as I thought the style was neat.

The sleeves are set-in
and wider at the top than at the cuff,
giving a sort of one-piece ~ kimono style look
(which they call a 'wedge')

The sample I did went together really fast and I realized that the fit was much better on me than a sleeve that is cut all-in-one with the body of the garment! I was thrilled as it gave me a whole new look and it fit well without a lot of alterations that I have been having to do.

What could be better??????

Last night, using the pattern, I cut out some wonderful fabric I have had for a few years, but never enough of for anything I thought might be good out of it. It is a heavy cotton knit with that sweatshirt lining to it.

I had plenty for the top and enough to cut a sort of off-center folded collar.

Tonight, I sat down to sew, and again, it went together really fast and I was pretty filled up with myself that I figured out how to do a 'made up collar' sans instructions!

I'm all set now for the cooler
(18 degree) nights we have been having lately!

The mail should bring the raglan sleeve pattern tomorrow and I already have fabric layed out for it!

Oh and speaking of 'vintage' . . . I found this quote by Woodrow Wilson on a website while searching for the patterns. Very cool . . .

"You are not here merely to make a living.
You are here in order to enable the world
to live more amply,
with greater vision,
and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement.
You are here to enrich the world,
and you impoverish yourself
(and I would add . . . 'and others')
if YOU forget the errand."

Until soon,
