From over the Hill . . .
January
11, 2012
I
was trying to organize my file of bits of stories and photos and
found this one sent to me by the Denny-Eller family . . .

Taken in 1936*
Left to right:
Eliza (Lila) Denny Eller (wife of Hubert Crees Eller)
Ruth Eller Kelly (daughter of Lila and H.C. Eller)
Sallie Jane Wolcott Eller (wife of Hubert Denny Eller)
*If
I had to guess, I'd say the photo was probably taken
at H.C. (Doc) & Lila Eller's house on Main Street.
You
can go to the September
17, 2011 post to read more and see other photos.

A
few weeks ago while Eb and I were having coffee at Wildwood Crossing,
Janell who owns 'New to Ewe' next door came in to ask if we knew
what this item was . . .
After
others began to gather at the table and much 'picking
it up, turning it around and over', it was decided it might
be an ashtray . . . and probably for a pipe.
When
Janell said it had come from a box she bought at Oliver's yard
sale, I decided Eb should have a souvenir of his good friend Oliver
and went next door to settle up with Janell.
Eb
was thrilled to have it and dug out the pipe he used in his Halloween
costume last year . . .

Nothing
better than a keepsake from 'times
shared' with an old friend.
Janell
also had this very special relic and I brought it home too . .
.

The
minute I saw it I knew 'The Wagner Saloon' was somehow connected
to Betty Jenner as I remembered her Aunt was Emma
Wagner Herzog.
I
emailed Betty (not telling her why I wanted to know) and she wrote
this back: "Ignace and his
bride, Mary (Liehenthaler) Wagner both from Alsaee, France migrated
to America in 1858 and 1860. There were six children: George,
Mary (Jenner), John, Frank, Willie, and Emma (Herzog). George's
Saloon was just a couple of doors up from the Hotel."
I
was curious as to where 'a couple
of doors up from the Hotel' was, so dug out the little
booklet 'Walking Through Historic
Etna, presented for your
pleasure by the Fairchild Medical Center Guild, Scott Valley Branch,
Sept. 16, 2006' and found this composite of west Main Street
at the turn of the century on page 11 and this information on
page 12: "Otis Wilsey Saloon
- Off to the Movies (433 Main Street): This is the last remaining
wooden structure on the west side of the Main Street business
district. It had been a barn of the pioneer, Swain. It was moved
from his property south of town to its present location. Otis
Wilsey ran a saloon here with plans for a skating rink in the
rear of the building. Later it became the Wagner Saloon, a Confectionery
Store, the Etna Fountain and Lunch, then Off to the Movies"
and now Mary Martin's Mountain
Healing Spa.
The 'Walking Through Historic Etna'
booklet is packed full of information. I think I picked
up my copy last year at Davie's 'Experienced Items' store . .
. or you could contact the Etna Museum by emailing
Peggy and ask how to purchase one.

Saturday night
found us in at the Callahan Emporium for a 'group' birthday party
hosted by the Clarence
Barger Band.

Band members
Clarence Barger & Marl Bell
celebrated their birthdays
along with Betty Lindholm
AND
'The
Mayor of Cheeseville' himself, Eb Whipple,
celebrated his 88th turn around the sun.

He proved once again . . .
you are never too old to dance!
