From over the Hill
. . .

November 23, 2011

As Grandma used to say . . . 'Whoa Nelly' or 'Hold the phone'!!!!!!!!!

On the November 22nd post about sending a Christmas card to a Recovering Soldier . . . a friend said they thought the cards would not arrive as addressed. Then Eb reminded me that last year we sent cards and they came back in the mail.

So my 'sleuth friend' Betty, who has earned the name 'Digger' for digging out pertinent information, guided me to snopes.com and sure enough:

"Christmas cards addressed to 'A Recovering American Soldier' or 'Any Wounded Soldier' sent to Walter Reed Hospital will not reach their intended recipients."

Yesterday's post originated as a request to further the project by the Interact Club of Etna High School . . . and it may well serve to remind young and old alike not to believe all that comes in email or appears on the internet!

Sooooooo we shall await further instructions.

The Red Cross does have a program for sending cards however they have strict rules and the cards must be postmarked by December 9, 2011 or will be returned to sender.

Perhaps the focus will be geared toward 'State of Jefferson soldiers', which would be 'local' for us.

School is on recess for Thanksgiving and my Advisor unavailable until the weekend.

More to come on this one.

That, however, does not give us free license to be at a 'black Friday sale' at midnight!!!! Enjoy the hours with family and friends, deepening connections.

One thing I do know for sure . . .

On Saturday, December 3rd from 5:00 - 7:00 pm (just before and after the Christmas Tree Lighting in Etna), The Friends of the Etna Library will host an open house and book signing by local author and artist Catherine McElroy (Queenie Mac).

Queenie's 'hot off the press' book, 'it's an absolutely perfect day for . . .' is a delightful alphabet book for people of all ages. You can read more about Queenie's work on her website.

Queenie will have books available for purchase and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Friends of Etna Library.

In addition to the book signing, there will be free cider, a bake sale and unique holiday decorations.

And don't forget the children's PAL Christmas party that evening AND the very special Piano and Music Concert at the Avery Theatre . . . our Fire Department's annual Fund-raising event.

'Big-time Saturday night' on December 3rd!

In joy!

There is always
lots to do locally . . .
you just have to know
where to look!
