from
my perspective . . .
It
was a gorgeous Autumn day as Eb and I drove to Callahan, our destination
being the Callahan Emporium.

What
a delightful
and welcoming lady
Fran, the new owner is . . .

Fran
bought the Emporium in January of this year and opened for business
on April 2nd. Very little has been changed in the downstairs store
and bar; however, Fran has made the upstairs into living quarters
that we could have moved right in to!

Original shelves
remain in the upstairs
These
display cases downstairs house numerous goodies

including
vintage jewelry collected and some 'reassembled' by Mary Roehrich
. . .

Fran and Mary
Mary's
grandfather, R.V. Hayden bought the building when it was known
as the Denny Hotel. It was originally built by A.H. Denny as the
Denny Bar Hotel, then later became the Baker Hotel. A photocopy
of a newspaper clipping from Jan. 22, 1903 says:
"A
deal was closed here Tuesday by Mrs. Ella P. Baker
(who had been living in Berkeley). She became the owner
of the entire property, known as the Denny Hotel,
formerly owned and conducted by A.B. Carr of Callahan.
She will take charge at once and her son John
will look after the business."
Remember
bronze baby shoes?? I still have Daddy's somewhere!

Mary
said her uncle, Ken Denny had the patent on the process.

These
shoes must have been made for a lady with really
narrow feet! And the leggings were ones that ladies
wore, making the shoes actually look like high boots.

We

Drive
out to Callahan and enjoy a great sandwich and cold drink, then
browse the numerous items for sale.
You
might want to inquire
about the 'herstory' behind
this sign . . .

And be sure
to mark your calendar for Sunday,
October 9th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm . . . 'word on the
street' is there will be a birthday
celebration for Fran that afternoon, complete with live
rock and roll music!
In
joy!
