The Orange Wheelbarrow

Me Musing . . . February 2, 2007

Time is flllllllllllying by . . . only 2 more days until the BIG Dance Party for my 60th celebration!

Last Friday I was looking for a Vogue pattern online and saw the same pattern listed on ebay so decided to check it out. Was I surprised to find a wonderful site by a woman in Florida who has a lot of Vogue Vintage patterns (which have now been resized for mature figures!).

Since I hadn't quite decided on what dress pattern to use for my party dress, those Vintage designs gave me a whole new idea . . . why not make up a dress from 1947, the year I was born ??????

I seem to recall writing in one of my other musings that I might be at the sewing machine at the last minute finishing my dress . . . so getting that 'flash' of 1947 vintage was putting me closer to that reality. . . especially since the pattern had to come from Florida in time! (Not only did I buy that pattern from her, I succombed to 5 others also!)

They arrived on Tuesday, giving me time to go through my $1 a yard stash. I found a fabric I had gotten 5 yards of months ago (figuring at the time that I would be able to use it as a sample for something!)

I love how the fabric is described on the bolt as
'origin and content undetermined'!!!
It has a wonderful drape and richness to it.

These were the late 1940's patterns I decided had great possibilites:

My original pick was the middle one; however, after they arrived and I looked more closely at them, I decided on the far right one (even though it showed it was from 1948). The pattern said it was for 'advanced' sewers . . . I wasn't deterred, however, and plunged right ahead!

The technique for putting the left and right front together was very interesting and getting the gathers to do what they were supposed to do was really quite simple.

I had to make my usual alteration of adding 1" in length in bust area. The darts were sewn a sort of funny way and when I tried on the almost-completed dress, the darts seemed to be making the bust look way wide . . . so I re-worked them and think it hangs better now.

It called for a side zipper and back zipper or using snaps at the side and small buttons at back neckline. Evidently the fabric has a little give to it (which I discovered when I tried on the almost completed version) so a side zipper was unnecessary. And it didn't take me long to sew up that space in the left sideseam . . . especially since I haven't put in a zipper in 30 years. Decided this was not the time to begin practicing! A hook and eye worked perfectly for the back neck.

I must have been 'in the flow' as everything went together smoothly.

And as of last night, I just had the hem to finish. I would have gotten it done; however, I was playing some of the 159 songs (from 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's) I have put together for our music and that got the ideas 'popping' of 'dressing' for the dances' . . . as in:

Charleston and other 'Roaring 20's music'

Perfect accents for my 'Hernando's Hideaway' favorite!
I'm not quite up to José Greco speed with the castanets;
however, each time I dance to that music, I seem to improve.
Besides . . . it's my birthday and I can do whatever I want!!!

"Well-behaved women seldom make history!"

Am sure there will be plenty of photos of the festivities to post early in the week.

Hmmmmmmmmm . . . wonder if the groundhog saw his shadow ?

I don't have time to look for that now . . . I have a hem to sew!

Until soon,
