The Orange Wheelbarrow

Me Musing . . . February 22, 2007

So much for Spring-like weather!

It began snowing those BIG cotton-ball flakes yesterday morning and continued all day and through the night. By this morning here we are with 12" of much needed snow.

So today will be a 'play day' as I watch the snow plow go up and down the road!

Last night I drew off a 'Noh coat' pattern of Bonnie Cashin's design. She was designing between the 30's (costumes for the Roxy Theatre in New York, then on to Hollywood for 20th Century Fox) and into the 90's until her death in 2000 at the age of 84.

Her 'signature' Noh coat was an unlined, sleeve/sleeveless T-shaped coat with deeply cut armholes.

Her basic idea was 'to create simple art forms for living in to be re-arranged as mood and activity dictate'!

After visiting Japan in 1950 and seeing the kimono, she got the idea of designing garments that could be layered, using textures, shapes, colour to create wardrobes of kinetic art.

She gave us the 'funnel necklines', used organic materials to 'sculpt' garments rather than 'stressing' the fabric with seams and darts and zippers (I looooove that idea as I have stayed away from zippers for 30 years!!!!!);
and especially liked to use non-fashion materials ~ like upholstery fabrics in her designs. (Sound familiar????? I certainly must be cut from the same cloth!!!)

There is a great site showing her work thanks to the UCLA Library.

This photo was taken in 1948 showing her in one of her sleeveless Noh coats, ready to leave for Paris (obviously not just an overnight jaunt from the looks of the luggage!).

Well, with the snow making it impossible to get the car out of the garage to head off to some exotic place, I'll just opt for searching
to see what 'non-fashion materials' I have in the 'stash closet' that
I can try this design on!

P.S. late in Feb.

I did finish my Noh coat . . . back to 'Groundhog Brown' . . . but it will be a good 'go over anything' fall and winter wrap for next season and it co-ordinates with all the other Groundhog pieces!

Until soon,
