  Noted events

The Reeb information was VERY confusing at first, especially since Heinrich Reeb married another Reeb . . . Catharina.
(They were my great-great grandparents.) With the help of information from John V. Reeb who has done extensive research into the Reeb lineage, I was finally able to sort it out.

Beginning in the 1590's, the Reeb family was first mentioned in the churchbooks of Keskastel and Rimsdorf (which were originally part of Germany, but in 1793 Napoleon officially claimed that area as part of France and is now known as Alsace Lorraine). This change from Germany to France also explains WHY they had German names, spoke German, and usually said they were from Germany!

The History of Keskastel states that the first Reeb in that village was a Hans Reeb who was born in the village of Rech in the year 1523. Rech is a very small village which is very close to two others: Sarralbe and Eich. The three are on the opposite of the Sarre River from Herbitzheim and Keskastel.

My family record seems to begin mainly in Herbitzheim. The first documents were of baptisms of children of a Jacob Reeb, specifically of Heinrich Reeb, baptized in the year of 1599.

From the records presented, Catharina (Katherine) and Heinrich (Henry) Reeb's great-grandfathers were brothers. And another of their brothers, Johann Adam, was the lineage ancestor for Judy, Jeff and Joan Reeb, our neighbors while growing up! In other words, OUR 5th great grandfathers were brothers. And to add to the confusion, most all of their first names were Johann!

From ship records on the Reeb.org website, I found that Catharina arrived with her family from Keskastel, Bas Rhin, France on the ship 'Glenburn' into New York on January 24, 1855 and settled in Franklin County, Ohio. I have not been able to find when/how Heinrich arrived. They were married in Franklin County in 1857, just two years after her arrival, and both about age 23.

Heinrich's father, Johann Heinrich Reeb was born in Rimsdorf, Bas-Rhin, France and died in Rimsdorf. I do not show death dates or places for Heinrich's mother or for two of Heinrich's brothers (Georg or Jacob); however, both show being married (1858 and 1867) in Rimsdorf. It would appear that only Heinrich came to the United States, probably with others Reebs, which makes it difficult to find him on ship records.

Seeing it on paper in this form makes a little more sense of the puzzle:

Heinrich (Henry) Reeb (1834-1909) (my great-great grandfather)
his father: Johann Heinrich (1797-1839)
his father: Johann George (1762-1818)
his father: Johann Daniel (1726-1810) (his brother Johann Jost connects to Catharina's line)
his father: Johannes (1697-1752)
his father: Johann Theobald (1653-1730)
his father: Heinrich (1599-1677)

Catharina (Katherine) Reeb (1833-1918) (my great-great grandmother)
her father: Johann Jacob (1806-1865)
his father: Johann Peter (1768- ? )
his father: Johann Jost (1737-1814) (his brother Johann Daniel connects to Heinrich's line)
his father: Johannes (1697-1752)
his father: Johann Theobald (1653-1730)
his father: Heinrich (1599-1677)

Our Reeb family name would have been carried on by Heinrich's brothers in Rimsdorf and by these brothers of Catharina, who were born in Keskastel, Bas-Rhin, France and immigrated to Columbus, Ohio in 1855 with their parents:

~ Jacob who married Mary Margaret Wagner
~ Johann Adam who married Louisa Holzbacher
~ Henry who married Pauline Gockenback
~ Charles who married Eva Matilda Streng

Catharina Reeb married a Reeb (Heinrich), and they had a small family of 4 children:

~ Katie (my great-grandmother)
~ Jacob Henry (who Grandma called 'Uncle Hen') who never married
~ Annie who died at age 15
~ Charles Edward who married Jennie Burrows (Aunt Jennie) and moved to New York.
(They signed Mother's 1933 autograph book while on a visit back to Ohio!)
The 1900 New York Census shows Charles, Jennie and children Hilda (born in Ohio) and Lyle Burrows Reeb (born in New York). Lyle would have been the namesake for my Reeb lineage. I have not researched him further at this time.
