Elizabeth
Grayless Hess died in 1851 when Moses was 7 years old.
John Moses Hess (the father) died in 1856 and it is unclear from the US Census
if all four
children went to live with their, then married, step-brother Thomas Moore
Hess and
his wife Ann Amanda Kinnear Hess OR if only James lived with them and
the youngest 3 children went to live with a neighbor, the Andersons.
On the 1860
Ohio Census, (at age 16), the value of Moses Hess's real estate was valued
at $3,300,
which would have been inherited from their father John M. (Moses) Hess.
The 1870 Census
(age 26) shows Moses Hess's occupation as 'Farmer' and
his real estate valued at $5,000 and value of personal estate at $500.
In the Centennial
Biographical History of The City of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio of
1901
this was written of John Moses Hess, Jr.:
John M. Hess,
Jr., the youngest son of his father's third marriage, was born on the old
homestead March 7, 1844 and
was reared to agricultural pursuits. In the district schools he obtained the
rudiments of his education which was
supplemented by a course of study in the Otterbein University, but he was
forced to put aside his text-books on account
of ill health.
Subsequently
he was married to Hannah K. Fairfield of Franklin County, a daughter of William
Fairfield, the wedding
being celebrated on the 15th of March, 1871. Four children came to grace their
union, namely: Walter, now deceased;
Benjamin C.; Elizabeth H.; and Flora Louise, at home. The family reside upon
a portion of the original Hess farm.
More information gathered:
Since finding
the (above quoted) Centennial History book written in 1901, I have acquired
a copy
of 'History of Balser Hess 1747-1806 and Descendants' compiled by
Frank E. Hess of Goshen, Indiana in 1950.
From the Hess book, a more comprehensive history of the Hess family is understood
and
it serves to correct some information that was given in the Centennial History
book.
From the Frank E. Hess book:
John Moses Hess,
Jr. was born March 7, 1844 and married Hannah Kenny Fairfield on March 15,
1871 at the home of her
uncle, James Kenny. She was born November 27, 1847 in Perry Township. The
minister was Elder Daniel Hess, cousin of the
groom. Hannah and Eliza Jane (James's wife) were cousins, Hannah's mother
being a sister to Eliza's father.
John Moses received
his education in the public schools of Franklin County and later attended
Otterbein University.
He was a farmer all his life. 'Moses', as he was called, was well over six
feet tall, quiet and easy going. He always had a
well groomed driving horse and took me (Frank E. Hess) on several Sunday afternoon
drives in the north end of Franklin County,
telling me the history of the Dublin Community.
One of his oddities
was always wearing a stiff bosomed white shirt. Hannah was just the opposite,
being small and wiry and a
human dynamo. Hannah died August 17, 1922, being murdered by an irresponsible
farm hand who died from self-inflicted
wounds the following day.
Moses died December 15, 1923 and both are buried in Union Cemetery across the road from the farm home.
