  Noted events

Elizabeth Grayless Hess died in 1851 when Maria Louisa was 4 years old.
John Moses Hess (the father) died in 1856 and it is unclear from the US Census if all four
children went to live with their, then married, step-brother Thomas Moore Hess and
his wife Ann Amanda Kinnear Hess OR if only James lived with them and
the youngest 3 children went to live with a neighbor, the Andersons.

On the 1860 Ohio Census, (at age 13), the value of Maria Louisa Hess's real estate was valued at $3,500,
which would have been inherited from their father John M. (Moses) Hess.

Maria Louisa Hess Preston and her family moved to California prior to 1918 as records show she is buried there.

We have no photos of Maria Louisa Hess; however, in Grandma's photo album there are photos of her husband and children.

In the Centennial Biographical History of The City of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio of 1901
this was written of Louisa Maria Hess:

Her name is shown as Louisa Maria, who married William P. Brown of Franklin County and in 1901 was living in New York City.

More information gathered:

Since finding the (above quoted) Centennial History book written in 1901, I have acquired a copy
of 'History of Balser Hess 1747-1806 and Descendants' compiled by
Frank E. Hess of Goshen, Indiana in 1950.
From the Hess book, a more comprehensive history of the Hess family is understood and
it serves to correct some information that was given in the Centennial History book
.

From the Frank E. Hess book:

Maria Louisa Hess was born March 7, 1848. She was four years old when her mother died and nine when her father died.
Following this she lived in the home of her oldest (step) brother, Thomas Moore Hess. She attended the Franklin County schools
and later her brother James took her to Westerville, Ohio where he was attending Otterbein University and there she received
her higher educational advantages.

Later they lived together on the Hess farm and James farmed and Louisa (Lou) taught school for a number of terms and
kept house. On April 30, 1873, she married William Preston Brown, who was born March 25, 1842 and was a resident of
Columbus, Ohio. After a wedding trip, they returned to Columbus to their new home at 33 North Third Street. 'Press' as he
was called, was a printer by trade and he followed this trade while a resident of Columbus.

The family later moved to New York City where their sons engaged in the printing business and their daughters finished their
education; Mary finishing in Medicine in the Medical School that is now a part of and affiliated with Columbus University
and Jessie preparing for a social work career at the same university.

Because of the poor health of Louisa, the sons sold the New York City business and the family moved to Los Angeles, California,
where they have since resided.

Both Lou and Press were very much interested in Hess family history and early began saving every scrap of information pertaining
to the family that they could find. It is to them that I (Frank E. Hess) have referred many times as the source of information.
It is unquestionably true that they knew more about the descendants of Balser Hess and personaly knew more Hesses than
any other living persons!

It is on the wall in the home of their two daughters in Los Angeles, that the original Document of Balser Hess hangs today (1950).
Its preservation is due to the foresight of Lou, who obtained it from Daniel Hess II, the last of his line and had it placed between
two plates of glass, for the benefit of future Hess generations.
(2007 Note: It is unknown where this document now resides.)

Louisa Hess Brown died in Los Angeles, California October 9, 1918 and her husband, William Preston Brown died
January 8, 1929 and both are buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, California.
