The Orange Wheelbarrow

Me Musing . . . November 1, 2008 . . .

I have been continuing on with my adventure into dye discharge. I had some slate blue stretch corduroy left over from a pair of 'high-water pants' ('cropped' as they are now called!) that I made before the Coast trip. Unfortunately there wasn't enough left for a jacket or even a vest, so I decided to try doing some dye discharge on the fabric, in hopes that I could then find a fabric to use along with it to create a vest.

I've never been a 'vest' kind of person, but wanted to try making one from my favorite jacket pattern (ie: just leaving off the sleeves!).

I wasn't sure if the corduroy was all cotton or not, but figured I'd find out real fast. I also tried a small piece of another fabric (and learned it must have polyester in it as it didn't take to the discharge idea at all!). I had read that along with the dye discharge I could add a little colour to it and discharge at the same time as adding colour.

Intriguing idea . . . so I tried it!

The fabric shows up more gray here rather than
the slate blue. The white streaks are the freshly applied discharge medium
and the yellow-green steaks are the colour I added to some of the discharge medium.

After it dried I used steam on the fabric
and the yellow-green steak became really yellow
rather than the acid green out of the dye bottle!
(The white is where the slate blue of the fabric gave up its colour)

I washed the fabric to remove the excess discharge paste and
along with it went most of the yellow . . . which actually is OK by me . . .
AND all a part of the Adventure!

I have looked all through my stash, but still nothing that I want to use with this 'new' fabric for the vest. To be continued . . .

Until soon,
