The Orange Wheelbarrow

Me Musing . . . November 15, 2008 . . .

Another week has whooooooooshed by!

I was 'out of the Valley' a lot this week on errands, so am happy to just be home enjoying quiet creative time.

Last night I made a 'pocket purse' (which brings back childhood memories of calling Grandma's purse that!) . . . I drew off a design that would normally be used for a pocket and decided to make it into a purse.

The outer fabric is one I made a jacket from a few years ago.
The inner fabric and handle are a suede-like fabric that I made
pants, skirt and jacket out of about the same time.

I liked the design and shape; however the fabrics didn't have enough body to them for a purse and when I picked the purse up to carry, it sort of caved in! Unfortunately I had already added my eyeglass pouch on the back so was at a loss as to how to stiffen the whole thing.

I decided to get the jacket out and see if perhaps it could use a big pocket (which could also double as a purse!). It could and I did!

I removed the handle and sewed the 'pocket'
onto the jacket just down the sides of the pocket.
The top area behind the flap is open so it is possible for me
to insert my hand and reach my glasses out of their little pouch!
On the flap behind the button is a magnetic closure which works really well
as the flap just 'jumps' down to meet the other magnet!

That 'design switch' seemed to open the door for more 'looking at
other possibilities'.

A few years ago I bought quite a bit of raw silk, some in natural colour and some already dyed. Having just passed 'pumpkin season' and leaves now falling of all the colours I am naturally drawn to . . . I pulled out the pumpkin-gold raw silk and wondered if it would go with a silk scarf I had dyed with indigo around a wine bottle (while in Portland in September) and then overdyed in a pumpkin-gold colour.

The overdyeing turned the indigo
to a softer charcoal colour.
Not sure yet what the pumpkin-gold raw silk will become
but 'Big Red' likes the change just now!

That, of course, led me to check out the autumn gold wool I bought in Ashland this past week. I only bought a yard as had thought maybe I would combine it with the orange wool I bought there a few weeks ago. The orange had felted nicely with not a lot of shrinkage. The autumn gold, however, went from 36" x 54" down to 27" x 45"!!!!! So I won't have a lot to work with.

It does look nice with a soft tapestry fabric I found the other day also. So maybe the two can combine for something interesting. Will be difficult to choose between the tapestry and the circle-squares!

Both look nice with the autumn gold wool

Back to the pumpkin-gold raw silk . . . I washed and dryed it and decided to cut off about 1/4 yard and try using the discharge paste on it to see what colour would appear.

I had been out raking leaves earlier and found a few interesting ones ~ one with some 'eaten' parts that I thought might make an interesting shape. I thinned the discharge paste and attempted to use a squeeze bottle to outline the leaf. I got some unexpected drops on the fabric, but figured they would add 'filler' between the leaves! (Plus this was a 'let's see what happens' piece anyway.)

This is while the discharge paste was still wet on the fabric

I let the fabric dry, then steamed it with the iron and it took on a whole new look . . . which I was really happy with. (I wasn't sure if maybe it would come out pink or some other 'not in my wardrobe' colour!)

I can live with this!

Tomorrow I will figure out what pattern I want to use and rough cut the pieces out of the pumpkin-gold raw silk, dye discharge it in areas and see what the end result will be.

Great FUN!

Until soon,
