'Chinra-Minka' ~The Old Red Barn

Me Musing . . . June 17, 2009 . . .

Yowie! Almost 3 months since I have posted anything new . . . or more precisely . . . anything of interest!

Days have flown by and May began with both of our backs going out. It seemed to take us until about a week ago to really begin to feel in better shape again.

Two days ago I decided to re-arrange my sewing studio (yet again!!!!) to make it feel more open. I figured then maybe I would have the incentive to get in there and create something! It seems as if when I have a clear tabletop or counter, that somehow things just find their way there . . . so the 'openness' lasted about 10 hours!

I was looking through magazines to get some inspiration and saw an ad for a 5-day workshop in a little town in Ohio (not far from where I grew up) that would be held in an old timber barn. That got me to reminiscing about last year and how we got the idea that we wouldn't mind having a little place 'in town' where we could stay a few days at a time and just be closer to everything (bank, grocery, post office, coffee house, popping in on friends, etc.) and we looked and looked, but the place we really wanted (a big lot with a wonderful one hundred + year-old barn on it) wasn't available to be sold separate from the house/lot next to it. We got discouraged and gave up on the idea.

Well, yesterday we were in having lunch and a friend stopped by and in the course of casual conversation said: "I see the old red barn is for sale."

I practically leaped from the table with the question . . . "It is ??????"

We had just driven down that street the day before and saw the sign on the house, but the barn/lot wasn't included. I ran to our real estate friend's office and practically yelled, "I just heard our barn has a for sale sign on it!". He checked and sure enough it had just gone on the market. I looked at Eb and he looked at me and I said, "I'm making an offer!"

Talk about 'what a difference a day makes' and 'timing is everything'!

For as long as I can remember we have both loved that barn . . . longer for Eb as he has known the owner for decades.

It was almost like Déjà vu when I moved here in 1997 and bought a "turn of the century" . . . (20th that is!!!) cabin that had never had electricity or plumbing and suffered from many years of
"UN-master-planned” remodeling attempts.

Some of the world's greatest residences are known by their addresses alone . . . and mine was known as . . . "you bought that place"???, as they would shake their heads in disbelief having seen each year take its toll on the cabin. However, when you 'surrender to your dreams', magical things seem to happen to and around you!

To make a long story short . . . my offer was accepted and the barn will have a new owner as of July 15th!

I came home and dug out my 'design notebook' that I began last year when we were looking for a place and had to laugh as the first page was a photo of a New Mexico house with rusted metal roof and the article began: "Over the past 5 years, rusted metal roofs, which grew fashionable in Telluride, Colorado and surrounding areas have become very popular." It went on to say that now they are selling 'new' roofing materials made to look rusted and calling them 'rustic chic' and 'unique' roofing options!!!!!!!!!!

Well . . . we're right in style!

Bricolage artistry here we go again!

Until soon,
