Me Musing .
. . about
today . . . June 23, 2009
The day began
very quietly, then an email arrived from Peggy, Eb's niece, with
some great vintage photos of the house behind The Old Red Barn.
This one was included and when I enlarged it I could see that, in
fact, The Barn was behind the bakery building! It is clear to the
left of the photo, but the way the vista appears it makes the roofline
look different; however, the darker part is actually the back of
the barn and roof.

Peggy
also found an old water line map of 1912 which showed owners' names
on each parcel. That was a real find too! We had thought The Barn
belonged to the front parcel (part of the bakery property) owned
originally by the Geney family . . . pronounced Genie . . . as in
'The Genie in the Bottle' and we laughed as this last week felt
like The Genie really popped the lid on Her bottle, as fast as things
moved!
However,
in looking at the 1912 map, it appears that The Barn lot belonged
to Nicholas Schmidt who also owned the parcel next to it which fronts
on School Street (now the big brick building on Collier Way). It
would make more sense, as Mr. Schmidt had a hotel in that front
building and in having folks stay overnight or longer, he could
provide a place to keep horses and feed.
Also
on that map it showed that on the next street over was the Barnum
& Walker Livery Stable, which in researching Eb's 'Walker' people,
Joseph Walker was one of his relatives. We can't seem to get away
from the Walkers no matter where we are in this Valley!
By early afternoon
we headed into town for a few errands. Usually when I ask Eb if
he wants to stop and pick up his mail, he says, "No, there's
nothing in there of importance." Well, the car just turned
right toward the 'highway mailbox' rather than left toward town.
The local (weekly)
paper comes in Tuesday's mail so he figured he'd have something
to read when we got home. He barely got the paper open and said,
"Come here . . . look at this:"
For
Sale:
Complete
bathroom: 5 ft. vanity, tile top and sink, toilet,
cast iron tub and shower enclosure, light fixture $100
Well, I called
right away, left a message and within 30 minutes got a call back
and we were out the door! On the way, we were taking bets of what
colour the sink, toilet and tub were. My guess was pink
. . . and you know from other writings how much I love pink! Then
the conversation changed to . . . "Okay, if it IS pink and
in good shape, could we live with it?????" Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Difficult to answer!
We were pleasantly
surprised that everything was in excellent condition AND it was
a soft pearl gray, a colour neither of us had ever seen before.
Plus, all the fixtures came with it and they were brass! The vanity
is a nice honey wood colour with lots of drawers and cabinets. It
certainly will change my idea of a bowl sink on the cactus stand;
however, as I wrote yesterday from My
favorite things of Ricardo Legorreta . . .
"able to change direction at a moment's notice"
. . . this
'instant' bathroom will work!
After dinner
we took a ride over to Peggy's to look at the big 1912 map and in
the course of conversation found they had two brand new
5 ft. x 3.5 ft. double pane vinyl windows they wanted to sell as
they were a mis-order for a job . . . YOWIE! More
Manna from Heaven!
Other than
that, not much going on here today!
Until soon,
Che'usa
