'Chinra-Minka' ~The Old Red Barn

Me Musing . . . about this week. . . August 7, 2009

Yowie! What a whirlwind time! Escrow opened July 21st and closed July 31st at 9:13 a.m. and we were in the little cottage by 10:30 getting ready to paint!

Bev, a friend came over and decided we had to find out what was under the living room carpet . . .

I had brought along my 'wonder bar', a handy tool that I had bought when remodeling the first little house here and before I knew it Bev had the carpet up and exclaimed " fir flooring" . . .

I was ecstatic! Then we decided to see what was under the lino that ran from front door to the bedroom hallway . . . and it was more wood, but with dried up old black stuff on the wood that had been used to glue down the lino. Les, who happened to be in town on holiday ran down to his house and grabbed a big scraper and spent the next 3 hours getting rid of the black dried-up stuff. What a guy!

It was amazing how big the living room looked with just the expanse of wood flooring.

Our God-son Modesto came over that night and began painting the ceilings for me as I can't do those anymore without lots of neck pain. I could hardly wait to get started painting the next morning and began in the bedroom.

The colour is actually more a soft wheat gold than what it looks like in the above photo. I did two walls a little darker and the rest lighter . . .

And of course, I can't just change colours in the corner, I have to do something interesting at the change-point!

Next I moved to the living room and two very similar shades of sage green which I love with the wood floor. If you squint your eyes and really study the little wall to the right of the window you can barely make out the zigzag design in the colour change! (Even in 'real-life' most people miss it!!!!!)

A little more pizazzzzzz
behind the front door

The colour I picked for the kitchen walls is an aqua and the cabinets will be a little darker aqua with the door/drawer fronts a pearlized aqua. Unfortunately before I can paint them (or the many doors and door/window trim in the house) Eb has to sand sand sand as they were painted years ago with high gloss enamel. I have never seen a house with as many painted surfaces as this one has.

Looking from 'breakfast room'
into living room . . . and
no, that's not an oversized can-opener on the wall!

It is the 'art-deco' doorbell
(here with its cover on it)
This house was built in 1948
and has great 'bones'. Many of the
original fixtures are old, but stylish
and still in good condition . . . made
in USA and built to last!

I have more photos to take, but wanted to at least keep you posted as to what we have been up to! I am really amazed at the 'pastel-ish' colours that this house picked for itself. Not my usual rich tones. I must have been having a pastel overdose, as I decided that one small wall in the laundry should be orange; however, the paint computer at Walmart must not have been calibrated correctly as the colour that came out on the wall was really 'construction-vest orange'!!!!

I can hardly wait to get up to the cottage in the morning to see if I can mix a few colours together and get something more 'cottage' and less 'construction'!!!!!!

Oh . . . we have lots of deer here in Cheeseville and there are just as many, if not more, walking the streets of Aetna! This big one, I am sure, will leave town before hunting season. (I hope!)

He likes to hang out between the back garage and neighbor's house.

Until soon,

Che'usa
