Me Musing .
. . September
17, 2009
We are still
in the 'moving stuff' mode . . . geeeeeeeeez what a lot of art and
sewing supplies I have!
I have been
attempting to sort and pack at the same time instead of just moving
everything and then 'some day' sort through things that I haven't
used in awhile. Since we have no definite time when we have to leave/arrive,
it makes it much easier.
This morning
it popped into my head to call our friend on the Hopi Reservation
in Arizona and see if some of the young women there could use a
portable sewing machine and fabrics for their ceremonial costumes.
I didn't get through to him (the one I send the turkey and other
feathers to for ceremonies), so dug out the phone number for Elmer,
the Hopi who we met at 1st Mesa about 3 years ago. He makes kachina
dolls and I bought a lovely one of 'Butterfly Maiden' from him at
the Harvest Festival we attended.

She is carved
and painted
Elmer
remembered us and after I told him my idea, he got very excited
as he said he heads up a Center there to teach the young people
different art skills. He said the young women are learning to sew,
quilt, paint . . . so anything I could send would be most appreciated.
I
drove to the little Cottage with a big smile on my face and a happy
heart, knowing that my 'extras' could be well used.
I
barely pulled in the driveway when a friend drove up with a gift.
She had been cruising 'Etcetera' in Etna and found a treasure she
thought would really fit in the little Cottage . . . a wonderful
stand mirror that we believe to be very old.

This side has
Kokopelli on it!
And the way the holder is made
it looks like One holding up the world!
I
told her the story of calling Hopi-land not a half hour before,
and took Kokopelli as confirmation that I was on the right airwave
of doing that! I just love it when that happens!!!!!
Remember
the two footstools I bought a few weeks ago from Etcetera??? Here
they are in their new lives . . .

This was the
old leather one and I found
a dark purple corduroy in my stash that matched
the stripe in the chair fabric!
(The chair looks a lot lighter purple in photo below
but actually has a dark purple stripe in it)

This is the
one that was green.
I decided to have it match an insert of fabric
I put over the swan rocker

An area rug
I bought years ago
almost matches the green in walls!
After
we visited and I finished unloading the car, Eb and I were hungry
so walked uptown to get a bite to eat. While the food was being
prepared I walked up to the Post Office and on the way ducked into
Etcetera just to check things out. And there in the corner was 'the
perfect' little table for the Bowl Room . . . for $15
!!!!!!

The 'V' shape
in the front
feels like carved stone!

Oh . . . and
here is a photo of the
finished pine floor in kitchen and breakfast room.
Quite
a change from this (which I can barely remember now!)

Looking into
the kitchen instead of toward living room
If
you have extra sewing/quilting/art supplies (or even moolah) you
would like to donate to the Center for the Hopi young people, email
me and I'll put you in touch with Elmer. They would be most grateful.
When
we visited there we were awed to learn that the Hopi feel their
whole existence here is for the purpose of doing Sacred Ceremony
to keep the world in balance. So from a very young age, they teach
their children the songs and dances and prayers . . . for the benefit
of all of us.
Until
soon,
Che'usa
