'Chinra-Minka' ~The Old Red Barn

Me Musing . . . October 13, 2009

We returned from our trip to Eureka, Nevada with both of us under the weather, so have been taking time off to get back to 100%. (Mine may have been a detox of all the chocolate milkshakes and home-made cinnamon rolls!!!!!)

While we were there I was able to have our friend Jim make me a sign for my 'will be' sewing-art workshop area. Since I'll be using the back garage which is on the Alley side of the property, I decided on the name 'The Alley Workshop'. I liked the idea of a workshop rather than a studio. I'll be able to work in there and make a mess, then close the door and return to the Cottage!

Saturday was the best we had felt, so off we went to the Cottage to see where to pick up with our work there.

Just as we were leaving Cheeseville, I spotted the garage sale our neighbor was having, so stopped in to see what treasures she might have and found this tubular metal chair. The tall back was what caught my eye and for $1.00 I figured I could find a place for it.

When we got to the Cottage I remembered I had a can of the hammered copper spray paint left, so we quickly removed the seat and I set to work spray painting it. Then I dug through my stash of fabrics and found this piece that I had bought in southern France in 1996 and had never really found a use for such a small piece . . . until this chair! The paint and the fabric changed the whole look of the chair!

I also found the larger piece of fabric I bought at the same time as I was into 'Tuscany gold' during that phase! So I spent the evening with the two fabrics and lots of paint samples getting an idea of what colours I wanted around me in the Workshop.

I had already bought floor paint in a turquoise-teal colour, but when I found the large paint sample (shown in above photo near bottom left), I just knew THAT was the floor colour I wanted. It is totally NOT what I would have thought I would pick, but there is something about it that is zany and outrageous . . . which feels like a new phase I am entering for the Workshop! We'll see if I have the courage to use it when the time comes to paint the floor!

I decided I needed to find a use for the gallon of turquoise-teal I had bought for the floor! I also had 3 gallons of exterior nutmeg-colour paint and two gallons I had bought to try on the outside of the Cottage; however, those two just didn't have enough pizaaaazzzzzzzz to them, so I mixed all 5 gallons together and came up with a softer nutmeg colour that I really liked! I decided to try it on the Cottage in the back . . .

I liked it, especially since it picked up some of the rust brown colour from Chinra~Minka (the old red barn) next door, so tried it on the wall of the Alley Workshop that faces the house . . .

Painting for me seems to be a type of Meditation . . .

and before I knew it I had most of the side done for the first coat!!

I brought over the taller ladder and finished the top, then used the blue that matched the laundry room back doors on the 'water table' trim piece and the turquoise-teal for the bottom. I'll have to look at paint samples again for door trim and along the top of Workshop!

I liked the effect much better than just nutmeg all the way down to the bottom. I tried doing the same on the cottage sample area, but it seemed a little 'too much', so will try a blue-green colour I have for the bottom of it. Will have to wait now until the rains stop . . . but we are VERY thankful for the rain, having had nary a drop for months!

Until soon,

Che'usa
