'Chinra-Minka' ~The Old Red Barn

Me Musing . . . December 17, 2009

We had a real cold spell last week . . . down to 2 degrees in some places in the valley! Just before that Eb finished installing the first new window in the Alley Workshop.

What a difference in size and the amount of light it lets in! The weather has been in the 40's the last few days, so he is back at work on framing the second one and it may be ready to install tomorrow. It will fit right up next to the first, so will almost be a 'wall of window' looking out at the barnlot and Mt. Aetna, my favorite view.

I decided I should have sanded the breakfast room table before putting the acrylic coating on it, so I sanded it the other night, then applied 3 coats of Polyurethane. I really like the effect . . . is hard to tell that the 'islands' are actually pieces of the old formica that wouldn't come off! And the years of Eb using it as a worktable just added great patina to it . . . funky but fun!

Tonight I wanted to retry rusting on fabric. I attempted it in the late spring without much result. Recently my surface design friend, Connie, sent updated instructions which included soaking the fabric in 50/50 solution of vinegar and water first.

I had some raw silk that Kenzan and I dyed on my last visit with her in the Portland area and Eb has a whole table of interesting rusted items! I dug out the fabric and decided I had nothing to lose . . . so here are the steps: (most people would use natural coloured fabric, but as you know, I'm not 'most people'!!!!!!!)

Fabric soaking in vinegar/water

Rusted items placed on fabric

Fabric wrapped around the items

Fabric bundles wrapped in plastic

The little bundles stay in the plastic and 'cook' for 4 to 5 days . . . which means that just before Christmas I can open the little packages and see if there are any surprises in there for me . . . I'll report back then!

Until soon,

Che'usa
