Studio/Sanctuary Tour .
. . .of my previous home
To
invite someone into your home
is
to allow them a glimpse
of
the 'specialness'
that
Life lives through you!
Some of the
world's greatest residences are known by their addresses alone .
. . and mine was known as . . . "you bought that place"???,
as they would shake their heads in disbelief having seen the 'before'
of it! However, when you 'surrender
to your dreams',
magical things seem to happen to and around you!
This
land is . . .
A
gentle place
where
one
'leaves
in love, AS love',
knowing...
'all
is well'
and
in resonance with the heavens!
Located in a quiet valley in far-northern
California, the house sits on 16.50 acres. Etna Creek and Whiskey
Creek run through the property. The hillside area of the property
is covered with douglas fir, white fir, alder, maple and pine trees.
The property is located at the foot
of Etna Mountain in the Salmon Mountain area and on the road to
the Pacific Crest Trail in beautiful Scott Valley, just one hour
from Mt. Shasta.
This far-northern California pristine
valley lies between the Trinity Alps and Marble Mountain Wilderness
areas and is 26 miles west of Yreka on Highway 3. This area is a
hideaway for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy cross-country skiing,
snow skiing, boating, hiking, fishing, backpacking, camping, horseback
riding, wildflowers, photography
on and on!
Surrounding the house are two old lilac
bush/trees, poplar trees and wildflowers in their natural setting.
Huge granite rocks are scattered around the land and along the creeks.
Farmland views from the front of house,
mountain views from the rear and sides.
A perfect "retreat" home which
began as a "turn of the century" cabin and suffered from
many years of "UN-masterplanned remodeling ideas, it
remained without electricity or plumbing until purchased by a Bricolage
Designer in 1997.
The house was then remodeled
for a specific type of person (a creative designer), at
a specific point in time (late 20th century)
and for a specific purpose (as
her studio/sanctuary home)...and all of those
factors had an impact on its design.
The house
evokes an immediate response by those who have entered
through its many old French doors...one IMMEDIATELY
wants to live there!
Let
a person live in one of these old, quiet places ...
and
the 'wine of their soul settles'
and
you may see the SUN through it by day
and
the STARS by night
The house speaks of honest craftsmanship
and simplicity and gives the impression of a comfortable maturity
of time, not blatant with newness. There is
no part where the designer's hands have not
touched, joining the
Essence of the land with Silence and Sound, Colour and Space.
Time has, however, worked many of the
materials...such as the original cabin floor in the kitchen area
which speaks of many feet calling it ...."Home", the old
French doors, and the 2-seater Outhouse with mountain view.
The house abounds with colour,
light, shadows and inter-relationships of indoor and outdoor spaces.
Although the house was designed as a
one bedroom, one bath.....the open-style upstairs bedroom is used
by the owner as a Quietude space.
The bath is large and contains a Japanese
soak tub (for viewing of the hillside and moon and stars through
the old French Doors that open onto a small deck and Zen garden)
as well as large shower.
The original front porch is enclosed
with old French Doors and is used for an office or summer studio.
The "Summer room" at back
of house (south side) is screened and the owner loves to eat breakfast
there in the summer and watch the deer and listen to the birds.

colours!)

Creatively working on the outhouse door ... nothing escapes her
paintbrush!
(note huge granite rock that rests there)

Outhouse adorned with found copper sheeting!

Entry into the "summer room" (which is now the
entry used as the front door). Note copper
added to door for decoration. Neighbor peacocks like to visit.

Summer room area is screened and great for
'outside eating' AND for watching
the deer that traverse the property daily

Understair area used as 'entertainment
center' of the house. Shelves under stairs house a tea bowl collection.
(Wow! A house without a TV....what a novel idea!)
